Kim Nam-joon, known professionally as RM, the leader of the globally acclaimed South Korean boy band BTS, has been diagnosed with COVID-19. The most notable instance of RM contracting the virus occurred in December 2021, during the earlier stages of the pandemic.
In December 2021, Big Hit Music, the management company for BTS, announced that RM tested positive for COVID-19. According to the statement, RM returned to South Korea on December 17, 2021, after completing personal engagements in the United States. Upon arrival, he underwent a PCR test, which returned negative, and subsequently entered self-quarantine as per South Korean health guidelines. However, before his scheduled release from quarantine, RM underwent another PCR test, which returned positive, leading to his diagnosis.
At the time of his diagnosis, RM was asymptomatic and adhered to the necessary health protocols, including self-isolation and treatment at home. Big Hit Music confirmed that RM had completed his second round of COVID-19 vaccinations in August 2021, which likely contributed to his lack of severe symptoms. Following a period of self-quarantine and monitoring, RM made a full recovery and resumed his activities with BTS.
Throughout the pandemic, BTS members have strictly followed health guidelines to ensure their safety and the safety of those around them. In addition to RM, members Suga and Jin also tested positive for COVID-19 around the same time in December 2021. All members received their vaccinations and complied with quarantine measures upon returning from international engagements. Their adherence to these protocols underscores their commitment to public health and the well-being of their fans and associates.
As of January 2025, there have been no new reports of RM contracting COVID-19. BTS continues to engage in various activities, including music releases, concerts, and philanthropic endeavors. The group remains vigilant in following health protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect their health and the health of their collaborators and fans.
While RM did contract COVID-19 in December 2021, he has since recovered and, as of January 2025, there is no evidence to suggest a recurrence of the virus. BTS’s proactive approach to health and safety continues to serve as a model for responsible behavior during the ongoing global pandemic.
