Olympic hero and BBC analyst Matthew Pinsent has blasted the way the game’s organizers handled the women’s boxing gender controversy. Rowing gold medallist Mr. Pinsent (1992–2004) claimed that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) faced difficulties since its policy ‘can’t have both equity and inclusivity’. After two athletes, Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan and Imane Khelif of Algeria, won gold in boxing despite failing a gender test and being disqualified from the Boxing World Championships the previous year, the gender controversy has overtaken the games.
The worldwide Boxing Association (IBA), which is dominated by Russia and serves as the sport’s worldwide regulatory body, was therefore denied the ability to administer the Paris Games competition due to concerns about corruption and governance. However, it’s thought that the disagreement over the choice had a significant impact on Thomas Bach, the president of the IOC, deciding to announce his resignation the following year. Now that he has entered the dispute, 53-year-old Mr. Pinsent stated that the IOC faces some “major challenges” in its efforts to move past the crisis.
