In a recent interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban reflected on his time with the team, revealing a significant lesson learned from his years watching Dirk Nowitzki. Cuban admitted that he didn’t fully appreciate Nowitzki’s greatness during his prime and vowed not to repeat that mistake with current star Luka Doncic.
“The nonstop brilliance of Luka. I don’t think I fully appreciated watching Dirk. I’m not going to make that mistake again. And, of course, the Mavs as a team. I love our heart, determination, and character,” Cuban said.
Dirk Nowitzki, who played for the Mavericks for 21 years, led the team to its first NBA championship in the 2010-11 season, triumphing over the Miami Heat in six games. During the Finals, Nowitzki was exceptional, averaging 26.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game, earning him the Finals MVP title. His illustrious career culminated in his induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last year.
Today, the Dallas Mavericks are once again chasing glory with another European sensation, Luka Doncic, at the forefront. Doncic is currently leading the Mavericks against the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals, aiming to secure the franchise’s second NBA title. Despite a tough Game 1, where the Mavericks fell 107-89, Doncic shone brightly with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals. However, he lacked adequate support from his teammates.
Kyrie Irving, Doncic’s co-star, struggled significantly in Game 1, managing only 12 points on 6-of-19 shooting. For the Mavericks to rebound in the series, Irving’s performance will need a substantial boost in Game 2.
The next showdown between the Mavericks and the Celtics is set for Sunday at the TD Garden. The team’s resolve and collective effort will be crucial as they strive to even the series and keep their championship hopes alive.
