AFC Wimbledon is reportedly pursuing a deal for Sutton United striker Harry Smith, according to a report from the South London Press. After finishing in the top half of League Two in the 2023/24 season, AFC Wimbledon, led by former Charlton Athletic manager Johnnie Jackson, secured a 10th-place finish, just five points shy of the play-off spots.

Sutton United, on the other hand, will not be competing in League Two or the EFL next season, having finished 23rd and three points behind Colchester United. Amid their relegation, one of their standout players, Harry Smith, has caught the attention of AFC Wimbledon.

The South London Press reports that AFC Wimbledon is keen on acquiring Smith during the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old striker had an impressive season despite Sutton United’s struggles, netting 14 goals and providing five assists in 42 games across all competitions. He also served as the team’s captain on several occasions, highlighting his leadership qualities.

Relegated teams often see their top performers move to clubs in higher divisions, and it appears that Sutton United may lose Smith to the Football League. The transition from the National League to the Football League is significant, and many players, including Smith, aim to remain within England’s top four tiers. Smith’s performance and experience in the EFL make him an attractive prospect for clubs like AFC Wimbledon.

AFC Wimbledon has aspirations for the next season, aiming for a play-off spot and possibly promotion to League One. Strengthening their squad with signings like Smith could significantly boost their chances. With the right additions, Jackson’s team, already showing potential this season, can bridge the gap and compete for a top-seven finish.

The interest in Harry Smith reflects AFC Wimbledon’s strategy to enhance their squad for a stronger promotion push. It will be interesting to see if they can secure his services and which other players might join the club to bolster their campaign for the upcoming season.
