Gary Keown has condemned what happened to Jack Butland and Borna Barisic following the Rangers’ victory over Kilmarnock, but he has refused to defend their actions.
The Gers defeated Killie 4-1 at Ibrox on Sunday (5 May), but that wasn’t enough for some fans.
As the Rangers players departed the field after the game, Butland and Barisic were abused, leaving them unimpressed.
In an editorial for the Scottish Mail on Sunday (12 May, page 105), Keown criticized the fan reaction while claiming there are no excuses for the players’ reactions.
He stated, “One disheartening aspect of society, particularly when it comes to football, is the number of fools who believe they can say whatever they want with no consequences. Another of the total twonks who appears incapable of enjoying life without documenting every detail.
“Football players frequently receive a poor press. It must go under your skin when some old man starts ranting through a metal barrier outside a stadium.
“This does not excuse Butland’s altercation with a fan following last weekend’s home win against Kilmarnock. It surely does not excuse Barasic’s restraint.
Should Jack Butland and Borna Barisic have done better for Rangers?
When players engage in an angry conversation with supporters after a game, it does not reflect well on the team.
The criticism levelled at the Rangers duo was perplexing, especially given Philippe Clement’s side’s recent 4-1 victory.
It’s reasonable to say it wasn’t the most convincing start to the game, which may have created some frustration among fans.
The visiting side nearly led at halftime thanks to a missed penalty and an own goal by James Tavernier, however Fabio Silva tied the score.
The second half went differently, with Ben Davies, Tom Lawrence, and John Souttar helping to secure a good outcome.
This did not prevent spectators from voicing their worries following the game, which Butland and Barasic were caught reacting to.
They should have kept their cool and not responded, but they are human and had the right to do so.
It isn’t an ideal position, and they could have done better, but fans should support the team rather than shouting trash in a car park.
