After concluding their offseason discussions, the New York Knicks have agreed to pay Jalen Brunson $156.5 million over four years. While Brunson has a $25 million deal for the current season, his player option for 2025–2026 has been revoked. The extension will result in a player option for $203.3 million in 2028.
Brunson made the decision to stay in New York despite taking a large wage cut in the hopes of landing a big contract later on and winning several titles while there.Julius Randle, who missed the whole postseason due to shoulder surgery, will be the next player the Knicks see. The 29-year-old forward’s $117 million, four-year contract, which includes a player option for the 2025–2026 campaign, is about to expire. Randle’s $30.9 million player option is expected to be opted out, as he has a guaranteed salary of $28.9 million for the following season. As with Brunson, the Knicks may think about extending Randle, but major challenges are expected.Ian Begley of SNY states that it appears doubtful that an extension can be agreed upon without significant compromises from both sides before next month. “I believe that obtaining an extension for Randle when he becomes eligible early next month would require a significant change in perspective on both sides.”Randle played in just 46 games during the previous season, a significant decrease from his previous minimum of 71 games over three seasons. He continued to shoot 31.1% from three-point range and 47.2% from the field, averaging 24 points, 9.2 rebounds, and five assists per game. Randle thrived close to the basket, using his strength to create high-probability scoring opportunities despite his sporadic inefficiencies from the outside. In addition, Randle was a formidable rebounder who recorded his highest percentage of offensive rebounds per game since 2019. He received his third career All-Star nomination as a result of his efforts. The Knicks might find it difficult to give Randle a long-term extension given the present limitations. He is contracted with them for the upcoming season, but if they are unable to get an extension, they will have to seriously consider their choices. The Knicks’ decision on Randle’s future remains significant as they manage their pay cap and team dynamics.
