Carlisle City has appointed experienced defender Dan Kirkup as their new manager. Kirkup, who has been with the club as a player for the past five years, steps into the managerial role following the departure of Jim Nichols. At 36, Kirkup brings a wealth of experience from his playing career, which includes stints with Carlisle United, Workington AFC, and Southport, among other Northern League teams.
The club expressed their excitement about Kirkup’s appointment in a statement, highlighting his history with the team and his work coaching youngsters in Haltwhistle. “We are delighted to announce today the appointment of our new 1st team manager. Dan Kirkup joined us as a player in 2019, continuing his career which began as a professional with Carlisle United Football Club. Dan’s breakthrough into senior football management is a significant step, and we wish him every success in his new role,” the statement read.
Kirkup has been a key figure in Carlisle City’s squad, contributing to their recent ascent to the Northern League Division One. His appointment comes at a pivotal time as he takes over from Nichols, who led the team to notable achievements, including the Division Two title in the 2021/22 season and the Fred Conway Cumberland Cup. The club acknowledged Nichols’ and his assistant Alan Inglis’s contributions, stating, “Everyone at the club will be sorry to see Jim and Alan leave although we understand their reasons after committing hundreds of hours to their roles. We wish them both well for the future.”
With Kirkup at the helm, Carlisle City aims to build on their recent successes as they prepare for the upcoming Northern League Division One season. The team’s first match is scheduled for July 27, where they will face Tow Law Town. Additionally, the 2024/25 season will feature local derbies against Kendal Town and Penrith, promising an exciting season for the fans.
Kirkup’s transition from player to manager marks a new chapter for Carlisle City. His familiarity with the team and his extensive experience in Northern League football are expected to be valuable assets as he navigates this new role. The club is set to announce Kirkup’s backroom staff soon, further solidifying their preparations for the new season.
