Hartlepool United’s new manager, Darren Sarll, is taking a cautious approach to the loan market as he builds his squad for the upcoming season. Sarll, who prefers working with smaller, versatile squads, has already made four summer signings, each capable of playing multiple positions.
Reflecting on past successes, Sarll acknowledges the benefits of loan signings when integrated into a strong squad. He cites the impactful contributions of players like Luke Armstrong and Tyler Magloire during Dave Challinor’s promotion-winning campaign in 2020/21. However, he also recognizes the pitfalls of excessive reliance on loans, which can indicate flawed summer recruitment, as seen with the struggles of Ciaran Brennan, Zak Johnson, and Kwaku Oduroh last season.
Sarll is determined to avoid repeating this pattern. Last season, Hartlepool made 14 loan signings, with only a few considered partial successes. This season, he aims to use the loan market strategically, adding quality or providing injury cover to his carefully curated squad. His first four signings—Adam Campbell, Luke Charman, Jack Hunter, and Nathan Sheron—demonstrate this strategy, boasting versatility and reliability with a combined 166 appearances last season.
Sarll’s preference for a smaller squad is driven by the desire for players who can adapt to different roles and contribute consistently. He emphasizes the importance of having a tight-knit group committed to playing regularly rather than a large squad with many sidelined players. This approach, he believes, will lead to a more cohesive and successful team.
As Hartlepool United prepares for the new season, Sarll’s cautious yet strategic use of the loan market aims to build a strong, adaptable squad capable of achieving their goals.
