“In a recent statement, Berk Brettler LLP, a prominent law firm, announced that Shohei Ohtani had fallen victim to a substantial theft, prompting them to escalate the matter to the authorities for investigation. Mizuhara, a longtime friend of Ohtani’s who had traveled with the Dodgers to Seoul for their MLB season opening series, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
During an interview with ESPN on Tuesday, Mizuhara initially claimed that Ohtani had agreed to cover his gambling debts. However, a day later, he clarified to the sports network that Ohtani was unaware of the debts and had not made any financial transfers to the bookmaker’s associate. Mizuhara took full responsibility for his actions, admitting fault and expressing readiness to face the consequences of his decisions.
Mizuhara disclosed that his wagers were placed on various sports, including international soccer, NBA, NFL, and college football, but notably not on baseball. The Dodgers, in response to media reports, confirmed Mizuhara’s termination on Wednesday and stated that they were actively gathering information regarding the situation.
During a news conference in Seoul on Thursday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts declined to comment specifically on the case but assured reporters that Ohtani would be playing in the second game against the San Diego Padres as scheduled. “Shohei’s ready,” he affirmed. “Ready to go for tonight’s game.”
Mizuhara has been closely associated with Ohtani since the latter’s move to California in 2018 when he joined the Los Angeles Angels. Mizuhara’s employment with the Dodgers coincided with Ohtani’s signing of a record-breaking 10-year, $700 million contract with the team during the offseason.
In a notable performance, Ohtani contributed significantly to the Dodgers’ season-opening victory over the Padres in Seoul, showcasing his prowess with two hits and an RBI.”
