St Mirren Pays Tribute to Stephen McGinn Upon Retirement
St Mirren Football Club extends warm congratulations to Stephen McGinn following his retirement from professional football. A revered figure in the club’s history, McGinn amassed 203 appearances across two stints with the Saints.
Stephen began his career at St Mirren, making his debut in 2007 after progressing through the youth ranks. One of his standout moments came in November 2008 when he scored the winning goal in the club’s final match at Love Street against Rangers.
After departing for Watford in January 2010, McGinn ventured through various clubs including Shrewsbury Town, Sheffield United, Dundee, and Wycombe Wanderers before returning to Paisley in January 2017. Quickly assuming the captaincy under manager Jack Ross, Stephen played a pivotal role in St Mirren’s dramatic ‘Great Escape’ in 2017, securing Championship survival on the final day of the season.
His leadership continued to shine as he captained the team to Championship glory in 2018, securing promotion back to the Premiership. McGinn further solidified his legacy with the Saints by guiding them through their first season back in the top flight, culminating in a crucial playoff victory over Dundee United in May 2019.
Following his second departure from St Mirren due to the COVID-19 shutdown, Stephen went on to make significant contributions at Hibernian, Kilmarnock, and Falkirk, where he notably led both latter clubs to league titles in the Championship and League One respectively.
The entire St Mirren FC community expresses profound gratitude to Stephen McGinn for his outstanding contributions and leadership both on and off the field. We wish him every success in his future endeavors.
