St Mirren has bolstered their squad by signing midfielder Oisin Smyth from Oxford United on a two-year contract. The 24-year-old Northern Irish player began his career with Dungannon Swifts, where he made over 100 appearances before transferring to Oxford in January 2022. During his tenure at Oxford, Smyth played 25 matches and netted one goal for the team, which recently joined the English Championship.
Reflecting on his move to St Mirren, Smyth expressed enthusiasm: “Watching the club’s impressive performance last season played a big role in my decision. There were several aspects that attracted me, and I’m happy the deal is finalized. My initial conversations with the manager were very encouraging. We focused on development and improving players, which aligns with my goal of enjoying football and playing regularly again.”
Smyth is the third addition to St Mirren’s roster this summer, following the arrivals of full-back Shaun Rooney and goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe. Manager Stephen Robinson is excited about adding Smyth to the team, stating, “He’s a talented player I’m familiar with from back home. Although his time at Oxford didn’t yield as much playing time as he hoped, he fits perfectly into the age bracket we favor. He has a lot of potential and versatility, capable of playing as a six or an eight.”
With Smyth’s signing, St Mirren aims to build on last season’s success and strengthen their squad for future challenges. Fans are eager to see how the new additions will impact the team’s performance and contribute to their aspirations.
