Caitlin Clark, known for her impressive career on the basketball court with the WNBA’s Indiana Fever, ventured into a new sport on November 13, 2024. The 22-year-old rookie, who made waves in women’s basketball this season, took a break from basketball to join an LPGA pro-am event, making her debut alongside two legends of the golf world: world No. 1 Nelly Korda and golfing icon Annika Sorenstam.
The event, part of The Annika Driven by Gainbridge at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, attracted a massive crowd, with estimates placing the number of spectators over 1,000. Clark played alongside Korda for the first nine holes and with Sorenstam for the back nine, and it was clear that her presence drew significant attention. As she made her way through the course, fans cheered her on, with many eager to catch a glimpse of the rising star in a new setting. “It was so fun,” Clark said afterward. “Getting to see them do what they do up front is like, people would pay for that. I got to do it for free and have fun with them.”
Known for her popularity in the WNBA, which helped increase league viewership and attendance in 2024, Clark seemed to have no trouble adjusting to the golfing atmosphere. She played with a lighthearted attitude, even when things didn’t go perfectly. On the third hole, Clark’s tee shot went off course and flew over the heads of spectators standing nearby. She kept the mood light, offering some playful commentary and even joking when a ball hit a fan on the ninth hole. “Thanks for the good kick, whoever I hit,” she quipped.
Despite some errant shots, Clark remained in high spirits, and her enthusiasm was infectious. At the end of her round, fans gathered behind the 18th green, eager to meet the WNBA star. Clark took the time to sign autographs, interacting warmly with supporters of all ages. Nelly Korda, who clinched the LPGA Player of the Year award earlier in November, praised Clark for her influence, noting how her presence helped draw large crowds and brought an exciting energy to the event. “To see the influence that she has on people, bringing people out here, and to see how amazing of an influence she is just for sports, was really cool to see first-hand today,” said Korda.
Annika Sorenstam, a 10-time Major champion who retired in 2008 as one of golf’s greatest players, also acknowledged the unique atmosphere Clark created. “It’s awesome. I love all the young girls with the signs. Nothing we would really see on a normal Wednesday. It’s just great how it brings attention to the tournament,” said Sorenstam. The excitement and energy surrounding Clark’s participation in the event showcased her cross-sport appeal, highlighting how her star power continues to make waves beyond basketball.
