Wigan Warriors rising star in the shop window for impressive display
Zach Eckersley, a rising star, made only his third game of the season for Wigan Warriors in the 19-18 victory over Warrington Wolves and excelled.
The 20-year-old replaced Jake Wardle in the Round 13 match at Halliwell Jones Stadium, partnering winger Liam Marshall on the left edge, and could be called on again next weekend on the greatest stage.
His highlights included a try-saving tackle on opposing centre Connor Wrench in the second half, as well as a good defensive performance against Sam Burgess’ team.
During the tense match, the academy product gained 101 metres from 16 carries, trailing only Marshall, Kaide Ellis, and debutant Jacob Douglas.
Eckersley may get his chance at Wembley Stadium against the same opponents next week, with Adam Keighran facing a tense wait following his red card in the Super League triumph.
The 27-year-old Australian centre was sent off with 11 minutes remaining in the game for a high tackle on opposing outside back Arron Lindop.
Peet stated after the match that his impressive performance has left him in a good position if the centre spot is made available for the encounter in the capital due to suspension, with the match review panel meeting on Monday.
“To be honest, he’s been banging the door down in terms of the way he’s been playing and training,” Peet said on Eckersley.
“I’m not surprised that he had a nice game. “I was pleased to see him make that try-saving tackle, and we’re all aware of what he is capable of.”
