Rangers Eye New Defender to Replace £21k-a-week Veteran
By Henry Jackson
Philippe Clement has big plans for Rangers this summer.
Rangers are reportedly looking to bolster their defense with a new signing to join Jose Cordoba, aiming to replace the outgoing £21,000-a-week veteran at Ibrox.
Transfer Window Strategies for Rangers
The upcoming summer transfer window is crucial for Rangers as they strive to close the gap on Celtic. Despite a valiant effort from Philippe Clement and his squad in the 2023/24 title race, the lack of squad depth has been a significant factor in their shortcomings. Strengthening the team with new signings is seen as essential to maintain competitiveness.
Jose Cordoba appears to be the first of these new signings, with the young defender from Levski Sofia reportedly agreeing to personal terms. At 22, Cordoba is viewed as a promising talent who can help solidify Rangers’ defense for the future.
Oscar Cortes, who joined on loan from Lens in January, has had a challenging stint at Ibrox due to injuries, managing only three league starts. Despite this, the club is considering a permanent move for the Colombian, indicating their belief in his potential.
Potential New Signings
One standout player in Scotland this season has been Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland. The 28-year-old has been impressive and could also play a role for Scotland at Euro 2024. Shankland, a lifelong Rangers supporter, might find the move appealing and could provide the attacking edge Clement seeks for a title challenge next season.
Rangers are also interested in Rapid Bucuresti’s Albion Rrahmani, who has scored 17 goals in 26 appearances. This demonstrates the club’s intent to strengthen their offensive options further.
Replacing Borna Barisic
According to The Daily Record [via Ibrox News], Rangers plan to sign a new left-back to replace Borna Barisic, who earns £21,000 a week and is set to leave at the season’s end. The Croatian defender is close to completing a move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, marking the end of a successful six-year tenure at Ibrox, during which he won the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup.
This anticipated change emphasizes the importance of the left-back position for Rangers this summer. One potential replacement is Jefte from Fluminense. The 20-year-old, who has gained European experience with APOEL Nicosia, is considered a viable candidate to step into Barisic’s shoes.
Looking Ahead
With the transfer window not yet open, Rangers have time to make strategic decisions. If Clement identifies Jefte as the ideal choice, his judgment is likely to be trusted, given his track record.
The summer promises to be a busy period for Rangers as they aim to strengthen their squad and prepare for another competitive season.
