Peterborough United has started the process of securing their standout players in anticipation of heightened interest from rival clubs this summer. The club has extended new contract offers to Hector Kyprianou and Kwame Poku, who have both had impressive seasons. Kyprianou and Poku are currently under contract until 2025 and 2026 respectively, but the club aims to further solidify their commitment. Additionally, young defender Emmanuel Fernandez has been presented with a new deal.
The club’s retained list, published on Monday, also indicates ongoing negotiations to retain Jed Steer and Josh Knight, whose contracts are set to expire this summer. In his “Hard Truth” podcast, club owner Darragh MacAnthony emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong core team. “We’ve offered new contracts to Hector and Kwame. They are still young and need more time with us. With players like Hector and Archie in the midfield, we have a solid foundation to build on,” MacAnthony stated.
He also reassured fans regarding Poku’s future, noting that while the player is under 24 and the club invested significantly in him, there is no immediate pressure to sell. “Kwame will be with us next year. No club is currently offering break-the-bank money for him, and whether he signs a new deal or not, we are confident in his value.”
Peterborough has also successfully retained Head Physio Jon Chatfield, despite interest from two other clubs. “We renegotiated his contract, and he decided to stay. Jon has revolutionized our medical department over the past two years, and I’d rather have one less player in our squad than lose such an essential staff member,” MacAnthony added.
While acknowledging the necessity of selling a few key players this summer, MacAnthony dismissed the notion of a widespread sell-off. “We expect some players to move to bigger clubs, but it won’t be many. Those who leave will help us cover our financial deficit and retool the squad with new talent,” he explained.
MacAnthony acknowledged that some players’ ambitions might make it difficult for the club to retain them. “A few players have indicated that the opportunities from other clubs are too significant to ignore, and we understand that. However, this is a routine part of football.”
Looking ahead, MacAnthony outlined his strategy for strengthening the team. “We have a clear list of targets and needs. My role now is to ensure we get the right deals to enhance our squad’s strength,” he concluded, likening his task to that of a wizard trying to balance multiple priorities and expectations.
