A move to Manchester United has been suggested for Denzel Dumfries.
Manchester United are just days away from the start of the season and still they find themselves struggling to resolve issues in the transfer market.
The prominent issue currently revolves around the future of Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Old Trafford. There is a desire to sell the Englishman this summer because although he is liked, there is little desire to give him a new deal in 2025 and thus it makes total sense to try and reclaim some money back this window rather than letting him walk for a free in 12 months.
Now, if you are still keeping up, there has been another twist this week as reports suggested Dumfries has halted negotiations with Inter as he is aware of potential United interest. For the Reds, this could kill two birds with one stone.
They could offload Wan-Bissaka in a swap deal and get his replacement in return. However, it is believed the Reds’ preference is to bring Mazraoui to the club perhaps due to Dumfries’ similarities to a familiar opponent.
Few players create such a Marmite reaction from football fans than Trent Alexander-Arnold. His creative abilities are unquestioned but he has received his fair share of criticism for his defensive capabilities.
Dumfries is nearly identical to Alexander-Arnold in this respect. Really, he is a right-sided midfielder but that position has been fazed out of the modern game.
Instead, you have to be either a wing-back or a winger and like Alexander-Arnold, Dumfries does not perfectly fit into either. The issue for Erik ten Hag is that United could risk becoming ultra-attacking with the Dutchman in their squad and expose their right flank.
This is a particular issue considering United have themselves a makeshift defence at present due to injuries and a lack of depth. Ultimately you would expect Diogo Dalot to be first choice next season but there are still clear question marks about adding a player like Dumfries into the squad to do the job of a right-back when required.my w
