Mark Jeffers watched local hero Callum Simpson defeat Zak Chelli to win the British and Commonwealth titles on Saturday night at Oakwell. The English champion Jeffers sat quietly and watched as 7,000 fans went crazy around him.
The English title was won by the unbeaten Jeffers, who defeated Chelli 18-0 (5 KOs) in the previous year. The tough 26-year-old from Chorley stopped Germaine Brown earlier in the year before pulling off an incredible knockout of Darren Johnstone in May. He is still holding out for the opportunity to make his breakthrough the way Simpson did. “I believe that seizing the chance is more important than choosing the appropriate battle. I gave Chelli two weeks’ notice, and he’s here, competing for the British title and making a tonne of money on a big event. Is that not boxing? It’s a crazy game, BoxingScene was told by Jeffers. “I will fight anyone at any time, as I have always stated. Let’s see where this goes.” Jeffers and Simpson have a clear mutual respect for one another. The two have sparred and have long been considered Britain’s two best hopes at 168 pounds, at least on the Northern scene. Jeffers knew that Simpson and Chelli would eventually clash and picked Simpson to follow in his footsteps by defeating Chelli before to the battle.
Once he had the British title belted around his waist, Simpson took the mic and declared his intention to prove without any reasonable doubt that he is the finest 168-pound fighter in Britain. He also identified Jeffers as a possible opponent in the future. Kevin Maree is the fighter’s manager, and in a perfect world, they would be trained simultaneously for the time being.
A major, multi-title match between Jeffers and Simpson might easily be the centrepiece of a return to Oakwell next summer if they can both spend the upcoming year gaining experience and moving up the rankings.Jeffers, who currently holds the third spot in the European super middleweight rankings, has long harboured ambitions of facing Kevin Lele Sadjo, the 23-0 (20 KOs) champion of the EBU. He disclosed that a year ago, he came dangerously close to getting the Frenchman into the ring. “Last year, I accepted that fight with six days’ notice, and they ultimately declined.” We’ll see. But I can’t hang around indefinitely. I really want the winner of this fight, if it’s not that fight,” he declared.
“I believe he was destined to face an Italian man. After he parked, his manager Kevin Maree called his trainer Mick Jennings, and they agreed on a six-day notice period. I immediately said, “Yes.” They chose an Argentinean instead while we were completing the contracts, which led to a tickover altercation. That concluded things. Sadjo and Diego Pacheco, a rising star in America, are said to have met. Sadjo would clearly find a matchup with the WBO’s top-ranked super middleweight far more tempting and financially advantageous than a matchup with the tough, self-assured Lancastrian, and Jeffers is ready for the belt to be vacated. Maybe. Defending it hasn’t been his thing,” he remarked of Sadjo. “In his most recent battle, he didn’t protect it. The previous fight had been against an Italian who had, I believe, won approximately thirty and lost ten. Giovanni de Carolis is his name, but I can’t recall it. He hasn’t faced any notable opponents since defeating Jack Cullen, in all honesty.”
