3 goalkeepers QPR should target as clubs battle for Asmir Begovic

QPR may need to acquire a new goalkeeper this summer, with Asmir Begovic attracting lots of interest from elsewhere.

Begovic joined QPR on a free transfer last summer, but his contract expires at the end of this season, and his status is already generating widespread attention as the transfer window approaches.

According to recent sources, Bournemouth and Celtic are both interested in signing the experienced shot-stopper, who was the R’s number one for much of the 2023/24 season.

It means QPR should keep some prospective replacements on their radar. Here are three important points to consider…

Marek Rodak – Fulham

Rodak, Fulham’s goalie, is among the best free agents available. His contract with the Cottagers expires this summer, and given his persistent lack of playing time, it appears that he will be moving on.

That should put a number of Championship sides, including QPR, on notice. Rodak has already shined in the second division, and at the age of 27, he has the potential to become a long-term starter at his next club, wherever that is.

Mat Ryan – AZ Alkmaar

Mat Ryan, a former Brighton and Valencia player who now plays in the Netherlands for Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar, is another viable free agency possibility.

If QPR are looking for another shot-stopper with a proven track record, the 32-year-old could be an intriguing alternative to consider.

Ryan is the captain of Australia’s national team and has 124 Premier League appearances in his career. It may be difficult to persuade him to move down to the Championship level, and his salaries may be costly, but he could be a viable choice.

Egil Selvik – FK Haugesund

Last but not least, one that is likely to incur a charge, but might be a good bargain for QPR.

Norwegian shot-stopper Egil Selvik got into his country’s national squad this season after outstanding performances for FK Haugesund, and his contract expires at the end of the year.

You would expect his predicament to attract attention this summer, so there may be competition for his services. He might be a good fit for QPR, who are expected to be looking for a goalkeeper.
