The Miami Dolphins are actively exploring roster upgrades as training camp intensifies, with two key developments generating buzz around the league. According to multiple sources close to the organization, the Dolphins have entered preliminary discussions regarding a potential deal with veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas. At the same time, there is increased focus internally on the contract situation surrounding defensive tackle Zach Sieler, whose future with the team remains a subject of ongoing deliberation.
Rasul Douglas, who most recently played for the Buffalo Bills after being traded midseason from Green Bay, has established himself as a reliable and playmaking presence in the secondary. Known for his ball-hawking ability and physical coverage, Douglas recorded four interceptions and 14 passes defensed in 2023. His veteran experience and versatility to play both outside and in zone-heavy schemes make him an appealing option for a Miami defense transitioning under new coordinator Anthony Weaver.
The Dolphins’ secondary has undergone some changes this offseason, including the departure of Xavien Howard and the continued recovery of Jalen Ramsey from a knee injury that sidelined him early last season. Although Ramsey has since returned to form, Miami is still seeking to solidify depth and experience behind its starters. Rasul Douglas, at age 29, could offer immediate impact and leadership for a unit aiming to regain its elite form from past years.
While interest in Douglas is genuine, the Dolphins’ front office remains cautious about financials. With key extensions on the horizon — including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa — the team is prioritizing flexibility. Still, if terms are favorable, a short-term deal with Douglas is very much on the table.
Meanwhile, the situation with defensive tackle Zach Sieler remains fluid. Sieler, 28, was a breakout contributor during Miami’s 2023 campaign, tallying 7 sacks, 56 total tackles, and playing a critical role in run defense. Though he signed a three-year extension in 2023, escalating salaries and the Dolphins’ cap situation have prompted speculation about either restructuring his deal or exploring trade options to gain cap relief.
Sources say the front office values Sieler’s toughness and work ethic, but is weighing whether the defensive line can be retooled with cheaper, younger options. The recent addition of defensive tackle Neville Gallimore and ongoing development of players like Brandon Pili and Josiah Bronson adds depth, but not the same level of production Sieler provides.
Internally, Dolphins coaches have pushed to retain Sieler, citing his consistency and locker room presence. However, with the team needing to balance long-term investments on offense with defensive sustainability, difficult decisions are looming.
As training camp progresses, both situations are expected to crystallize. For now, the Dolphins are keeping all options open as they try to position themselves for a deeper playoff push in 2025. Whether that includes Rasul Douglas in the secondary or a continued role for Zach Sieler in the trenches remains to be seen.
