
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart didn’t hold back when responding to recent remarks made by SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum regarding quarterback Gunner Stockton. During a media availability following the Bulldogs’ latest offseason practice session, Smart addressed Finebaum’s criticisms directly, defending both Stockton’s potential and the development strategy of Georgia’s quarterback room.
Finebaum, known for his candid takes on SEC football, recently questioned whether Stockton had what it takes to be a long-term answer at quarterback for the Bulldogs. On a nationally televised segment, Finebaum claimed that “Georgia’s future at quarterback is murky at best,” and suggested that Stockton “hasn’t shown signs of being ready for the moment” if called upon to lead one of the nation’s premier programs.
The comments did not sit well with Smart.
“To be honest, it’s disappointing to hear that kind of commentary from someone who knows how hard these kids work and how tough it is to play quarterback at this level,” Smart said. “Gunner Stockton is everything you want in a young quarterback — smart, tough, competitive, and respected in the locker room. He’s come a long way since he arrived, and I wouldn’t bet against him.”
Stockton, a redshirt sophomore, has been competing in a crowded quarterback room that also includes Carson Beck — the likely starter heading into the 2025 season — as well as talented underclassmen and incoming freshmen.
