When Tyler Shough signed with the New Orleans Saints, he knew he was stepping into a unique opportunity—one that could define the next chapter of his football journey. The former Texas Tech and Oregon quarterback arrived in New Orleans with optimism, humility, and a clear determination to make the most of his chance at the professional level. Now, just weeks into rookie camp and offseason activities, Shough is already beginning to find his footing in the Big Easy, both on and off the field.
Shough, who battled through multiple injuries during his college career, enters the NFL as something of a sleeper prospect. Despite the ups and downs, he displayed flashes of brilliance at every stop in his college career, showing a strong arm, quick decision-making, and the kind of toughness coaches admire. For the Saints, who have been seeking depth and competition in their quarterback room, Shough represents a low-risk, high-upside option.
Speaking with local media after a recent practice, Shough expressed gratitude for the opportunity and excitement about joining the storied Saints franchise. “It’s been incredible so far,” he said. “From the moment I got the call, I’ve felt welcomed. The coaches, the players—everyone’s been really supportive. It’s a blessing to be here.”
While he acknowledges the learning curve that comes with transitioning from college to the NFL, Shough has embraced the challenge. “The speed of the game is definitely faster, and there’s a lot more detail in everything—from footwork to protections to reading coverages. But I’m soaking it all in. Every day is a chance to get better, and I’m learning from some great people around me.”
In particular, Shough has taken advantage of the presence of veteran quarterbacks in the locker room. He mentioned spending extra time studying film and asking questions to grasp the intricacies of the Saints’ offense. “I try to be a sponge,” he said. “I’ve got guys ahead of me who have been in this league and know what it takes to succeed. Watching how they prepare, how they lead—it’s been huge for me.”
But Shough’s transition isn’t limited to the football field. Adjusting to life in New Orleans has been its own adventure. Originally from Arizona and having spent much of his collegiate career in the Pacific Northwest and Texas, Shough admitted the culture and energy of New Orleans took him by pleasant surprise.
“There’s nothing like it,” he said with a laugh. “The food, the music, the people—it’s just got this vibe. Everyone is so passionate, not just about football but about life. I went to get lunch the other day and ended up in a conversation with a guy who told me stories about the Saints from back in the ’80s. That’s the kind of city this is—connected, proud, and full of energy.”
He also expressed interest in exploring more of the city in the coming months. “I haven’t even scratched the surface yet. I want to get to some festivals, try some more local spots, and just really get a feel for the place. There’s so much history and culture here—it’s special.”
While he understands that his position on the depth chart is far from guaranteed, Shough remains focused on the things he can control: preparation, attitude, and steady improvement. “I’m just trying to earn respect—through my work ethic, my consistency, and the way I carry myself. I’m not looking too far ahead. It’s all about today and getting better each rep, each meeting.”
The Saints, known for developing talent and creating opportunities for players who might have been overlooked elsewhere, could be an ideal environment for a player like Shough. Head coach Dennis Allen and the offensive staff have emphasized competition and growth, and Shough appears to be embracing that philosophy wholeheartedly.
Whether he earns a roster spot, lands on the practice squad, or continues to grow within the organization, Shough’s early days in New Orleans have set a positive tone. He’s focused, grounded, and eager to prove himself—not just as a quarterback, but as a teammate and contributor to the team’s culture.
As the offseason rolls on and the Saints inch closer to training camp, all eyes will be on how Shough develops. For now, he’s content putting in the work and soaking in every moment—both under center and under the New Orleans sun.
